TikTok enters music with social features

FEATURE

🥊 TikTok vs Music Giants

TikTok has disrupted video entertainment - it’s working on doing the same to shopping - and next up is Music. TikTok Music is the “social” music streaming service that will rival the likes of Spotify.

After launching in 5 countries, last month we wrote that:

  • TikTok Music is a standalone app that comes with a paid monthly subscription.

  • TikTok Music wants to separate itself from the competition with social features. Enabling users to connect, comment and collaborate on playlists.

  • And it is built around new music discovery with the now famous ‘For You’ tab recommending personalized tracks.

A new interview with Semafor lifted the lid more on their plans:

  • TikTok said the opportunity comes from the fact that they are already the most “impactful discovery platform or tool in the history of the music industry.”

  • As you would expect, recommended music will be influenced by the content a user consumes on the main TikTok app.

  • Lastly, while the goal is to build their own subscription base, TikTok will allow users to listen on Spotify, Apple, and Amazon Music too.

Unlike their competitors, TikTok are building for a younger generation. If TikTok Music goes to plan it will pull even more users into their eco-system. And no doubt they will continue to expand the industries they plan to disrupt.
