5๏ธโƒฃ Biggest Headlines From Last Week

Hello - here is your final wrap-up of the year. If you find these updates useful, continue to look out for them in your inbox in the new year. Enjoy the holidays and here are the 5 biggest must-knows from the last week.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Round up

1. Instagram releases' Candid stories' test, a BeReal Clone, and a handful of other new features. BeReal has grown from 10k to 20M daily active users in just over a year, which has led to Meta bringing a similar feature to Instagram. (Social Media Today โ†—๏ธ)

    • Candid sends a random daily prompt to share an image using the front and back phone camera with a friend group. Meta confirmed the feature is in testing on Instagram and Facebook.

    • Instagram also announced Notes. Notes are 60-character posts that appear at the top of the IG inbox for 24 hours. The notes can be seen by the user's close friends list or selected followers.

    • Lastly, there's Group Profiles. Users can share posts and stories to a shared profile. The content is shared with group members (instead of all followers). It's designed for friends to connect, but brands and creators could also find it valuable.

    2. Google updated its guidelines for checking search quality. Google's reviewers manually check and rate web pages generated by certain searches. Google will now assess whether the content creator has first-hand 'experience' of using the product. While this doesn't impact the algorithm, this could be indicative of future changes. The other main considerations on the list remain Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. (Search Engine Journal โ†—๏ธ)

    3. Klarna expands influencer marketing platform to 45 markets after a successful U.S. launch. Klarna started as a buy now pay later company but has since offered a complete in-app shopping experience. Klarna can offer its 450,000 registered brands a place to identify and manage influencer partnerships. (Charged Retail โ†—๏ธ)

    4. Netflix is unable to deliver intended ad impressions to brands. Netflix overestimated the ad inventory it would have available through its ad-supported plan. Digiday reported Netflix is returning money to advertisers. The discounted plan was expected to generate 4.4m subscribers, but presumably, the actual numbers have fallen short of the target. 5. TikTok tests new landscape video mode to broaden usage. Offering landscape mode sees TikTok inch more into YouTube's territory by giving creators more flexibility with their content. Earlier this year, TikTok also extended the length of videos to 10 minutes. (BBC โ†—๏ธ)

    • YouTube launched paid courses in India

    • Walmart released a visual search feature

    • Reddit created a website for new advertisers

    • Apple will reportedly allow third party app stores on iOS17
