1. Apple is selling advertising in prime real estate on the iPhone. Apple released a new ad slot on the front page of the iOS App Store. (Search Engine Journal โ†—๏ธ)

  • The ads will feature on the 'Today' tab, immediately below the fold.

  • Advertisers can reach iOS users as they visit the App Store to find new apps.

  • Apple also made a second ad placement available. 'Product Pages' ads. These ads show at the bottom of App pages underneath a 'You Might Also Like' header.

  • This release came a week after Apple started claiming a cut of boosted social media posts. Apple makes further moves to increase its advertising market share.

2. Substack is aiming to attract people wanting a Twitter alternative. Last week, Substack promoted itself as a safe haven from Twitter. Now the newsletter publishing platform launched Substack Chat. The feature allows writers to create threads for comments like on Twitter. Twitter acquired a Substack competitor, Revue, last year. Now Substack is this opportunity to take aim at Twitter. 3. YouTube brings Shorts to TV. YouTube has designed a new way to watch Shorts. An optimized experience brings short-form video entertainment to larger screens. YouTube Shorts has 1.5 billion users, and this feature could help grow watch time. Viewers can find Shorts in the YouTube TV app, often pre-installed on smart TVs. This gives YouTube an advantage over TikTok, which also has a TV app. (The Verge โ†—๏ธ)

4. Google sunsets Similar Audiences. Google will remove its version of lookalike audiences in August 2023. Google cited privacy as the main reason. Google is promoting 'Optimized Targeting' as an improved alternative solution. With OT, Google targets people likely to convert based on real-time data. This includes data on the recent search queries of people who converted. (Search Engine Land โ†—๏ธ)

5. Google's John Mueller predicts links will be less valuable over time for SEO. Backlinks are regarded as a major ranking factor. But Mueller sees Google's search ranking algorithm giving less weight in the future. (SEO Roundtable โ†—๏ธ)
