Microsoft Discussed Selling Bing to Apple as Google Replacement

In 2020, Microsoft discussed selling the Bing search engine to Apple, replacing Google as the default option on Apple devices.

The deal would have certainly increased Bing’s global share of the search market from 9%. Since Apple has over 1 billion users of its Safari web browser the deal would have changed search marketing.

Apple ultimately decided against the acquisition. Partly because their existing agreement with Google brings in billions of dollars. But also due to concerns over Bing's quality and capabilities.

Microsoft and Apple executives testified in the US Department of Justice case against Google, where Apple's relationship with Google is a key focus.
