A Marketerā€™s Guide to iOS 17

Apple is readying iOS 17 for a September launch. New event. New iPhone. And new privacy changes to keep Marketers on their toes.

This time Apple is focusing on links! And specifically, the tracking added to the end of URLs that uniquely identify users.

Appleā€™s new ā€˜Link Tracking Protectionā€™ feature applies to Appleā€™s Mail app, Appleā€™sĀ MessagesĀ app and Safari Private Browsing.

For advertisers, the main thing of note is that Google Ads click tracking (GCLID) will be removed for users in Safari private mode. According to Digiday, around 20% of Safari users opt for Private Browsing.

Initially it was thought that UTM parameters would be impacted but that is not going to be the case.

According to Marketing agency Croud, the impact of Appleā€™s latest release will be ā€œlimitedā€. But they predict similar changes could roll out to Safariā€™s non-private browsing in the future. Which would have a much bigger impact considering the 1 billion plus people who use the browser.
